Alternate Meter Settings
Alternate Meters
An alternate meter may be another meter such as an engine or component hour meter OR it may represent items transported by the asset such as passengers, cases, boxes, tons, yards, and pallets.
Up to 4 alternate meters can be assigned to an asset. Once they are assigned, they can be viewed in the Alternate Meter Banner in the asset file.
Alternate meters can be used to help determine when PM services are needed. For example, if the asset has a standard odometer and an hour's meter, the hours meter can be set up as an alternate meter and the PMs can be set up to be tracked by days, miles, and hours.
Setting Up Alternate Meter Types
Prior to assigning an alternate meter to an asset, the types/descriptions of alternate meters available for use need to be created.
To define the types of alternate meters available for use in asset files, follow the below steps.
Click on Assets in the menu.
Click on Settings
Click on Alt Meters
On the Alt Meter Maintenance Screen, click the
New Alt Meter ButtonOn the added line, type in the alternate meter description/type to be available.
Click the check mark to save the new description.
Editing Alternate Meters
Click on the name of the meter you wish to update.
Enter the new name.
Click the checkmark to save.
Deleting Alternate Meters
Click on the trashcan located to the far right of the Alternate Meter tab you wish to delete.
A pop-up window will ask you to confirm> Click Delete
The Alt Meters option under the Asset System Settings is also where a user can delete an alternate meter type and edit those descriptions as well.
Deleting a type here affects every asset in the company, not one unit. The type disappears from all assets that used it, the readings and life-to-date recorded under it are no longer shown, any PM interval tracked by that alternate meter stops advancing, and the remaining types are renumbered, so readings on other assets can end up labelled with a different meter description. Do not delete an alternate meter type just to stop a prompt on a few units; see “Meter prompts and how to change them” below. If you are not sure what an asset’s alternate meter is used for, contact RTA Support before deleting.
Adding Alternate Meters to the Vehicle
Once the alternate meter types have been set up, they can be applied into assets. An asset can have up to 4 alternate meters assigned to it.
Refer to Asset Meter Management for instructions on adding and editing alternate meters to the assets.
Meter prompts and how to change them
Fleet360 asks for meter readings when a Work Order is created or its meter is updated, and (depending on the switch) when fuel is entered. Which prompts appear on a given asset is decided by two things working together:
Setting | Scope | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Odometer Prompt system switch (Admin > System Switches > Work Order) | Whole company | No / Yes / Yes with Alt Meter in WO and Fuel / in WO / in Fuel, plus Days Between Odometer Updates. Refer to Work Order System Switches. |
Primary Meter type on the asset (Asset Management tab) | One asset | Miles, Kilometers, Hours … or None. With None, the Work Order shows no primary meter prompt for that asset and no reading is required. |
Alternate Meter Info panel on the asset (Alt One – Alt Four) | One asset | Each slot that has a type selected (for example HOURS) is prompted for on the Work Order when the switch includes Alt Meter in WO, and that alternate meter field is required. |
What this means in practice
To stop all alternate-meter prompts for everyone, set Odometer Prompt to Yes (primary meter only) or No. There is no switch that turns alternate meter prompts off for one meter type only, and no per-asset “do not prompt” setting.
An asset is prompted for an hour (or other alternate) meter only because that type is assigned in one of its four alternate meter slots. The prompt for one unit therefore follows the asset file: an asset with no alternate meter assigned is never asked for one. Once a slot has a type it can be changed to another type on the asset (Edit Description), but it cannot be cleared back to empty in Fleet360; if a unit genuinely has no such meter, contact RTA Support to have the slot cleared rather than deleting the meter type for the whole company.
For the primary meter, the per-asset control is the asset’s Meter Type. Setting it to None removes the prompt for that asset but also stops meter-based (Miles/Hours) PM intervals and odometer-based reporting for it. Refer to Asset Management Tab.
Days Between Odometer Updates only changes how often the primary meter is required (0 = every time); it does not affect alternate meter prompts, and an asset whose primary meter has never been updated is always required.
“The Work Order does not ask for an odometer” is usually the asset, not the switch. Check the asset’s Primary Meter type first: if it is None (common on assets imported without a meter type), the Work Order hides the meter field and does not require a reading, and no Odometer Prompt setting will make it appear. Set the Meter Type and current reading on the asset, then check the Odometer Prompt switch, that the Work Order is open, and that the user has the Edit Work Order Meter permission. See Update the Work Order meter.
